Step-by-step guide
Online tutoring for South African learners: from your first subject to your first paid lesson
Tutor school and university learners in subjects you know well, online or in person, through agencies or directly with parents. This guide takes you from choosing subjects to your first paid lesson, with real 2026 rates, scripts and a 14-day plan.
Is this guide for you?
Good fit if
- You did well in a school subject (agencies usually ask for 75% to 85%) or studied it further.
- You are patient, explain things clearly and can keep regular afternoon or weekend slots.
- You have a phone or laptop and a stable enough connection for video calls, or you can travel to learners nearby.
Think twice if
- You need money within the next two weeks: agency vetting alone can take one to three weeks.
- You are not comfortable working with children and their parents, or with background checks.
Honest expectations
- Most new tutors get their first paid lesson in about three weeks, sometimes sooner through family and friends.
- Agencies pay roughly R130 to R270 an hour (2026); tutors who find their own learners often charge more.
- Demand rises before exams and drops in holidays, so expect uneven months.
