How we research

  • Primary sources first. Platform fee pages, terms and eligibility pages, SARS, Stats SA, the Information Regulator and municipal by-laws. Secondary sources (news, blogs) are used only for context and marked as secondary.
  • Every claim has a date. Each source records the date we accessed it. Each opportunity shows when it was last verified.
  • Confidence is explicit. High: several primary sources agree and are current. Medium: primary source for the core facts, judgement for the rest. Low: thin or conflicting evidence. The option is penalised in rankings.
  • Statuses. Draft (not shown), verified, needs review (shown with a warning), retired (not shown).
  • Review cycle. Every profile is due for re-review 90 days after it was last verified. Platform fee changes trigger an immediate review.
  • No invented numbers. Where we do not have reliable South African price data, we say "insufficient data" instead of guessing. We do not publish search volumes, earnings or user counts we cannot verify.
  • Corrections. Found something wrong? Tell us. We correct and re-date the page.

Corrections we have already made to commonly repeated claims:

  • VAT threshold. Compulsory VAT registration is R2.3 million from 1 April 2026. Many articles still say R1 million.
  • Wise, our own correction (25 October 2026). We had said Wise could not give South Africans receiving account details. That was wrong for businesses: Wise's South African business pricing page lists account details in 22 currencies, including USD, for a one-time 21 GBP fee.
  • Personal Wise accounts. Whether individuals in South Africa can open one is unclear on Wise's own pages, so check wise.com for your own situation.
