PayPal (withdraw through FNB)

PayPal balances are withdrawn to South Africa through FNB's PayPal service; you can link it to a bank account elsewhere. FNB currently charges a tiered fee of roughly 0.81% to 1.51%, and PayPal's own receiving and currency conversion costs come on top. Many survey, tutoring and transcription platforms only pay via PayPal.

Payoneer

Payoneer is built into many marketplaces and withdraws to any South African bank. Its pricing page shows withdrawal fees with currency conversion in a range of roughly 1.2% to 4%, displayed before you confirm. For marketplace freelancers this is often the simpler route.

Wise

If you run a registered South African business, Wise Business can give you USD and other account details. Wise's South African business pricing page (checked 25 October 2026) lists a one-time 21 GBP fee for account details in 22 currencies; local USD payments in are free, a USD wire costs 6.11 USD, and converting to rand has a fee that Wise shows before you confirm. For individuals, Wise's own South African pages are unclear on whether you can open a personal account, so check wise.com for your own situation before you rely on it.

Platforms that pay in rand

Etsy Payments deposits in rand to a South African account (deposits under R1,500 attract a R30 fee). Local platforms and South African clients pay by EFT, which is usually the cheapest of all.

Practical advice

  • Compare the total cost (platform fee + payout fee + exchange-rate margin), not just one number.
  • Keep a record of every payout and the rand amount received. SARS taxes worldwide income.
  • Large or unusual inflows may trigger questions from your bank about exchange control; keep invoices.
