How to make money online in South Africa: honest guide
By the Earn Path team · last reviewed 24 October 2026 · how we check facts
Most "make money online" lists rank options by how exciting they sound. That is the wrong order. The useful question is narrower: given what you can already do, how much money you can risk and how soon you need income, which option has a realistic path to a first paying customer?

Start with the constraint that matters most
If you need money within a month, choose work where a platform or employer brings the customers: tutoring agencies, remote customer support roles, or selling things you already own. Content, affiliate sites and digital products are almost never fast.
If you have a sellable skill (writing, design, bookkeeping, development, teaching), freelance services are usually the quickest route to meaningful income, because you are selling an outcome people already pay for. Marketplace fees are real: Fiverr keeps 20% of each order and Upwork charges a variable 0–15% fee.
If you have no skill to sell yet, be wary of anything promising quick income. Legitimate low-skill online work exists, research studies on Prolific accept South Africans, but it pays pocket money. It will not cover rent.
What South African tutoring and teaching actually pays
Published rates give a useful reality check. Teach Me 2 advertises R130–R190 an hour for tutors; Cambly says it pays US$0.17 for every minute you spend chatting (about US$10 an hour), so quiet time online between calls lowers your real hourly rate. Those numbers are why we model your effective hourly rate instead of the headline one.
Two things most guides skip
- Connectivity and power. Stats SA's 2025 General Household Survey found most households access the internet mainly through mobile data, and only about one in five have a fixed home connection. Video-heavy or deadline-critical work needs a reliable connection and backup power.
- Tax. SARS taxes residents on worldwide income. For 2026/27, you only pay income tax once your total taxable income passes R99,000 (under 65), but you should keep records from your first payment.
Red flags
Real work pays you. Apart from open platform costs you can check on the platform's own pricing page, such as Upwork Connects (paid tokens for sending proposals, listed on Upwork's pricing page), being asked to pay first is a warning sign. Joining fees, "task" groups on WhatsApp or Telegram, and guaranteed trading returns are the most common traps. Capitec's fraud centre has a good checklist.

Lists can't account for your circumstances. Our free assessment takes 5 to 10 minutes and ranks options against your skills, capital, time, connectivity and how you are willing to sell, and shows exactly why each one scored as it did.
Questions people ask
What is the easiest way to make money online in South Africa?
Usually selling a skill you already have, like tutoring, writing, admin or design, to people who already need it. It costs little to start and pays sooner than building an audience or a product.
How much money do I need to start?
Many service options start with R0 to R500 if you already have a phone and data. Products, stock and paid adverts need more, and carry more risk.
Are apps that pay you to watch videos real?
Some pay tiny amounts. Groups that pay for likes and then ask you to deposit money are scams. Real work doesn't ask you to deposit money to unlock pay.
