How to start freelancing in South Africa

Freelancing is the fastest way most skilled people can earn online, but only if you narrow down what you sell and who you sell it to.
On this page (6 sections)
1. Sell an outcome to a specific buyer
"I do graphic design" is hard to buy. "Menus and social posts for restaurants in Durban" is easy to say yes to. Narrow positioning also tells you where to find clients.
2. Local or international?
Local clients pay in rand by EFT with no platform fee, and you can meet them, but you usually have to approach them. International marketplaces bring buyers to you, but take a cut (Fiverr keeps 20%; Upwork 0–15%) and pay out via services like Payoneer.
3. Price from evidence
Published South African rate ranges are thin. Secondary sources (e.g. JustMoney) suggest starting writers charge around R1–R2 a word. Treat any figure as a starting point and test it: if everyone says yes immediately, you are too cheap.
To turn the money you need each month into an hourly rate, follow the four steps in how much to charge as a freelancer.
4. Three samples beat a long CV
Make three pieces of work for the exact client type you want, even if unpaid.
5. Protect yourself
Take 50% deposits from new direct clients, limit revisions in writing, and keep records for SARS from your first invoice.
Use our hourly rate calculator to work out what you need to charge to reach your income target.
