Online income scams in South Africa: how to recognise them
By the Earn Path team · last reviewed 24 October 2026 · how we check facts
One rule covers most cases: legitimate work pays you, and it doesn't ask you for joining, activation or deposit fees. (Open platform costs such as Upwork Connects (paid tokens for sending proposals, listed on Upwork's pricing page) are different: you can check them on the platform's own site.)
Common patterns
- Task groups on WhatsApp or Telegram pay small amounts for likes or reviews, then ask for a deposit to unlock bigger tasks.
- Fake recruiters offer remote jobs and ask for "equipment deposits", training fees or your banking login.
- Trading and crypto schemes promise guaranteed or daily returns. Check the FSCA's register before giving any money to an investment or trading service.
- Recruitment-driven schemes where income comes mainly from signing up others rather than selling to real customers.
- Pay-to-join data entry or "typing jobs" with a starter pack.
How to check an opportunity
- Search the company name with "scam" and read independent reviews.
- Apply only through the platform's official website, never a link in a group chat.
- Never share one-time PINs, banking logins or ID copies with unverified parties.
- If a "job" asks you to recruit, deposit or buy a kit, walk away.

Questions people ask
How do I know if a job offer is a scam?
The biggest sign is being asked to pay anything to start: a fee, a deposit, a training cost or a top-up. Paste the offer into our scam checker to see which known patterns it matches.
Where do I report an online scam in South Africa?
Report trading and investment scams to the FSCA, pyramid schemes to the National Consumer Commission, and money lost to SAPS. Tell your bank straight away if you shared card details or an OTP.
Are WhatsApp task jobs legit?
No. Paying a few rand for likes or reviews and then asking you to deposit money to unlock bigger tasks is a scam pattern.
