How affiliate links work

  • Lesson 1 of 25
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

A shop gives you a special link. When someone clicks it and buys, the shop pays you a share of the sale, called a commission.

Where people share links: WhatsApp groups and status, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, blogs and newsletters.

Two kinds of programme

  • Run by the shop: for example Loot's own programme.
  • Through a network: a company such as AdMarula runs programmes for several shops and pays you once your earnings reach a minimum.

Good to know

  • Amazon's Associates programme does not have a South African marketplace, so South African creators join a supported one, such as the US.
  • Takealot advertised an Affiliate Program Manager job in October 2026 but has not published a commission rate.

A good sign: your first commission within three months.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Pick a niche you know (baby gear, beauty, tech, home).

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
