Step-by-step guide
Extra nursing shifts through an agency: from registration to your first paid shift
Pick up paid extra shifts as a registered, enrolled or auxiliary nurse through an agency or platform. This guide covers published 2026 South African agency rates, SANC fees, the public service permission you need first, a 14-day plan to your first shift, and how to protect your rest and your registration.
Is this guide for you?
Good fit if
- You are a nurse or nursing auxiliary registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- You want extra income from weekend or night shifts.
- You can manage your rest so extra shifts stay safe.
Think twice if
- Your SANC annual fee is unpaid. Practising while not registered is illegal.
- You work in the public service and are not willing to apply for written permission first.
- You are already exhausted. Tired nurses make mistakes.
Honest expectations
- Most nurses get a first shift within two to four weeks, because agencies first check your documents and SANC status.
- Published 2026 hourly rates vary a lot: from about R135 an hour (NSSA, RN) to R352 to R392 an hour (A24, RN standard shift). Check the exact rate before you accept any shift.
- One or two extra shifts a month is a realistic start.
