How small-business bookkeeping works

  • Lesson 1 of 23
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You keep a small business's financial records up to date, usually every month.

Typical monthly work

  • Capture income and expenses from bank statements, invoices and slips.
  • Reconcile the bank account.
  • Send invoices and follow up on unpaid ones.
  • Give the owner a simple monthly report.
Who pays

sole traders, small shops, salons, builders, consultants and small companies who don't need a full-time bookkeeper.

How it's priced

by the number of transactions a month, or by the hour for catch-up work.

The legal line

giving tax advice or completing tax returns for clients for payment needs registration as a tax practitioner with a recognised controlling body and SARS. Bookkeeping on its own does not.

A good sign: one monthly client within one to two months.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Ask 5 accountants whether they outsource bookkeeping.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
