How baking celebration cakes to order works

  • Lesson 1 of 26
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You bake and decorate cakes for birthdays, baby showers, weddings and other celebrations, to order.

What sells

  • Birthday cakes in buttercream, in standard sizes.
  • Bento cakes (small lunchbox cakes) and cupcakes, which are quicker to make.
  • Two-tier cakes for bigger parties, at a higher price.
How it works

the customer chooses a design and date, pays a deposit, and collects or gets a delivery on the day.

The rule that matters

under the R638 regulations, food may only be handled for sale on premises with a valid Certificate of Acceptability.

A good sign: a paid deposit from someone outside your family within the first month.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Bake and photograph three designs you are proud of.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
