How selling digital templates works

  • Lesson 1 of 23
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You make a useful file once, such as a budget spreadsheet, a meal planner, a CV template or a quote form for a small business, and sell it as a download many times.

What sells

  • Money tools: monthly budgets in rands, debt payoff trackers, stokvel records.
  • Work tools: CV templates, invoice and quote templates, staff rosters.
  • School and home: study timetables, chore charts, meal planners.

Where it sells

  • Your own WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, with a payment link.
  • A platform such as Gumroad, which pays South African bank accounts in rands.
  • Teacha! if your product is for teachers or learners.

What makes it work: a product that solves one clear problem, with South African details (rands, SARS dates, local banks) that overseas templates miss.

A good sign: someone pays for your first product within a month of you showing it to people.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Find 5 existing templates in your niche that have reviews (proof people pay).

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
