How a personal training business works

  • Lesson 1 of 23
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You plan and lead safe workouts for clients, one-on-one or in small groups, and charge per session or per monthly package.

Where you train

  • Parks and complex gardens.
  • Clients' homes.
  • A gym that allows outside trainers (ask first, as many charge a fee or say no).

The steps to your first paying client

  1. Get first aid training and start a recognised qualification.
  2. Write a simple health questionnaire and waiver.
  3. Train two or three friends free for two weeks to practise.
  4. Set your session and package prices.
  5. Ask for referrals.

A good sign: a trial client books a paid package.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Run three free group sessions.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
