How small-business graphic design works

  • Lesson 1 of 24
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You design the things a small business needs to look trustworthy: a logo, social media posts, flyers, menus, price lists and business cards.

Who pays: salons, restaurants, spaza shops, churches, NGOs, event organisers, tutors and new start-ups.

Three ways to sell

  • Fixed packages: for example a logo with a business card, or a flyer.
  • Monthly packages: a set number of social media posts every month. This is where steady income comes from.
  • Marketplaces such as Fiverr and Upwork: useful for practice and overseas clients, but crowded at the cheap end.

A good sign: one paid project from a business you contacted within three to four weeks.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Redesign three real local businesses' materials as spec samples (do not publish their logos as yours).

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
