How selling handmade goods works

  • Lesson 1 of 25
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You make products by hand and sell them to people who value local, handmade work.

Where it sells

  • WhatsApp Business and Instagram: your catalogue, with orders and payment by EFT or a payment link.
  • Bob Shop: a South African marketplace. Listing is free, and a success fee is charged when an item sells.
  • Craft markets: monthly markets for local makers, with a stall fee per day.
  • Local shops: gift shops and cafés that stock local makers.
  • Etsy: for light, high-value, unique items that can ship overseas. South Africa is eligible for Etsy Payments.

What makes it work: good photos, a price that covers your time, and one or two channels done well.

A good sign: sales to people outside your circle of friends within a month.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

List five products with prices on your WhatsApp Business catalogue.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
