How selling home food online works

  • Lesson 1 of 26
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You cook or bake at home and sell through a WhatsApp Business catalogue, WhatsApp status and social media. Customers order and pay by a cut-off, and you cook only what was paid for.

What sells

  • Weekly frozen or fresh meals for busy families and workers.
  • Lunch for an office or a nearby business.
  • Weekend specials: curries, bunny chows, braai sides, koeksisters, rusks.
How you earn

a fixed weekly menu, a cut-off day, and a delivery or collection day.

The rule that matters

under the R638 regulations, food may only be handled for sale on premises with a valid Certificate of Acceptability from your municipality.

A good sign: your first pre-order day sells out to people you know.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Cost one menu item fully.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
