How handyman and repair work works

  • Lesson 1 of 25

  • Free lesson

You fix and fit things in people's homes and small businesses: doors, locks, shelves, curtain rails, TV mounts, painting, patching, tap washers, flat-pack furniture, gutters. Some people also do car repairs at the customer's home.

Who pays

homeowners and tenants with a list of small jobs, landlords and estate agents, small shops, and older people who can't do the work themselves.

How it's priced

by the hour (usually with a two-hour minimum), by the half or full day, or a fixed price per job.

The legal line

electrical installation work and certificates of compliance are only for registered persons. Gas work needs a certified installer, and work that needs a plumbing certificate needs a qualified plumber.

A good sign: your first paid job within two weeks of telling people.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Write a price list for five jobs you do well, using the published rates as a guide.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
