How selling at craft, flea and weekend markets works

  • Lesson 1 of 21

  • Free lesson

Rent a table at a craft, flea or weekend market and sell goods you make or buy in, face to face, with a card machine and a WhatsApp catalogue for repeat buyers.

Who it suits

People who enjoy chatting to shoppers, can stand for a day and have a product people pick up and buy on the spot.

Who pays

Weekend shoppers, families, tourists and gift buyers looking for something local.

What they get

A fun place to find gifts and local goods that are not in the malls.

Is there demand?

SA markets publish stall fees of about R170 to R550 a day (Hoedspruit, Field Market, Cedar Market), which shows a steady supply of paying traders. Market organisers choose traders, so popular markets have waiting lists. We found no reliable data on what a typical trader takes on a day.

Real examples
  • Neighbourhood Saturday markets
  • School and church fairs
  • Craft markets in tourist towns
  • Night markets
  • Festive season pop-ups

A good sign: you cover your costs on your first day and three people ask for your number.

Do it now

Tick it off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Visit two markets as a shopper and note what sells, prices and how busy it is.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
