How recycling collection works

  • Lesson 1 of 23

  • Free lesson

You collect recyclables from homes, businesses and public spaces, sort them by type, and sell them by weight to a buy-back centre.

What usually pays

  • Aluminium cans and metals pay the most per kilo.
  • Clear PET bottles and HDPE (milk bottles) pay more when clean and sorted.
  • Cardboard and paper pay little per kilo but come in volume.

The steps to a first payout

  1. Find the nearest buy-back centre and its price list.
  2. Set up a dry sorting spot.
  3. Arrange regular pickups from homes and shops.
  4. Sort, weigh and sell.

A good sign: a weekly payout that grows as more sources join your route.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Find the nearest buy-back centre and ask today's prices.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
