Customer support agents help a company's customers by phone, chat or email: answering questions, fixing problems, processing returns, calming frustrated people down. Many of these jobs can be done from home.
Three ways South Africans get these jobs
- Local companies and BPOs (contact centres) that hire work-from-home agents. South Africa has a global business services sector (contact centres and outsourcing) with its own industry body, BPESA.
- International companies hiring through an employer of record (EOR). A foreign company employs you legally in South Africa through a local partner, so you get a normal payslip.
- International companies hiring contractors. You invoice them and handle your own tax.
Why people like it
- A salary instead of chasing gig income
- No commute (and no taxi fare)
- Skills that grow into team lead, quality, training or customer success roles
Honest downsides: shifts (sometimes evenings or weekends for overseas customers), performance targets, and you need a quiet space, a reliable connection and a plan for power cuts.
This guide also works for remote assistant roles. Swap 'support agent' for 'assistant' and the steps are the same.
