You work from home in South Africa for a company based overseas. You might be a full employee through a payroll provider, or an independent contractor who sends invoices. The work is the same as an office job, done on video calls, chat and shared documents.

Common remote roles for South Africans

  • Customer support and customer success.
  • Operations and admin, including virtual assistants.
  • Sales development and account management.
  • Marketing, writing and design.
  • Bookkeeping and finance support.
  • Software development and IT support.

The steps to your first salary

  1. Choose one or two roles that match your experience.
  2. Update your CV and LinkedIn for those roles.
  3. Apply steadily to real listings.
  4. Prepare well for video interviews.
  5. Check the contract, pay route and tax before you sign.

A good sign: a second-round interview with a real company you have checked.

Your challenge

Decide if it fits you

Write one line on whether this path fits your time, your budget and the people around you, and why.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down your answer
  • You know whether to carry on or look at another path

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
