How paid research studies and surveys work

Universities and companies pay people to answer questions, test ideas or take part in short online experiments. Platforms match you to studies based on your profile, and pay you after the researcher approves your answers.

Two main kinds

  • Academic research platforms (like Prolific). Researchers must pay a fair hourly rate, and you are paid per study.
  • Market research panels (like TGM or The Panel Station). You earn points or small amounts per survey, and cash out once you reach a minimum.

The steps to your first cash-out

  1. Sign up to one or two trusted platforms.
  2. Verify your account and complete your profile fully.
  3. Take studies carefully and honestly.
  4. Link PayPal and cash out once you reach the minimum.
  5. Track what you earn per hour.

A good sign: your first approved study and a cash-out that lands in your bank.

Do it now

Tick each one off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Sign up to Prolific; track earnings for 2 weeks.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
