Module 1 · Is this path for you?

What a social media manager actually does

  • Lesson 1 of 23

  • Free lesson

Walk past any salon, spaza, panel beater or physio in your area and check their Facebook or Instagram. Plenty of them post once in a blue moon, or not at all. The owner knows they should. They just never get to it.

That's the gap you fill. A social media manager for a small business:

  • Plans what to post each week (specials, behind the scenes, reviews, tips)
  • Creates simple posts and short videos, mostly on a phone
  • Schedules them so they go out on time
  • Replies to comments and messages, or flags them to the owner
  • Sends a short monthly report: what went out and what people responded to
What it isn't

going viral, or promising sales. You can't control that, so never promise it. You sell consistency and a business that looks alive and trustworthy online.

Why it suits many South Africans

clients are local, so you get paid in rands by EFT. You can start with a phone. And a monthly retainer means repeat income from the same client if you do good work.

The catch

clients rarely find you. You have to approach business owners, in person or by message. Module 4 makes that easier with scripts.

Your challenge

Gap spotter

Walk down your nearest shopping strip (or scroll Google Maps) and find five businesses whose social pages are quiet or messy.

You are done when:

  • Five business names written down
  • For each: last post date and one thing you'd fix

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
