Tourist guiding: from registration to your first paid tour

Show visitors your city, region or culture as a registered tourist guide. This guide covers the legal route (accredited training, first aid and provincial registration), what guides and tour companies charge in 2026, how to find first work with operators, and a worked rand example with clearly labelled example figures.

Is this guide for you?

Good fit if

  • You know your area, its history and stories well.
  • You enjoy people and speak clearly. Extra languages help a lot.
  • You are willing to train and register before you guide for pay.

Think twice if

  • You want to start guiding for pay without registering. That is against the law.
  • You need steady income all year. Tourism is seasonal.
  • You don't like long days on your feet.

Honest expectations

  • You must complete accredited training, get a first aid certificate and register (R240, renewed every 3 years) before guiding for pay.
  • Few pay figures are published. Reported examples run from about R100 to R200 an hour on freelance profiles to US$120 a day in one posting for language guides.
  • Work is seasonal and irregular at first. Many guides start with operators before running their own tours.
