How tourist guiding works

  • Lesson 1 of 23
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

Registered guides lead visitors on walking, driving, nature or cultural tours. Most start freelancing for tour operators, then add their own tours.

What the law asks for

  • Training through a CATHSSETA-accredited provider or a SAQA-recognised qualification.
  • A valid first aid certificate.
  • Registration with your Provincial Registrar of Tourist Guides.

The steps to your first paid tour

  1. Choose your guiding field (for example culture, city, nature).
  2. Train, do first aid and register.
  3. Approach tour operators and hotels.
  4. Guide well and get re-booked.

A good sign: an operator books you for a second tour.

Do it now

Tick each one off when it is done. Your ticks are saved on this device.

Quick check

Pick an answer to see how you did.

In a typical case, how long until the first money comes in?

Your challenge

Check it before you spend

Ask two tour companies or guesthouses if they need guides for your area.

You are done when:

  • You wrote down what you found
  • You know whether to carry on or adjust

You report this yourself. Nobody checks, so it only counts if you really did it.
