How translation work works

  • Lesson 1 of 25
  • 5 min read
  • Free lesson

You turn written text from one language into another so that it reads naturally. Most local work is between English and isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi or another official language.

Who pays

  • NGOs and clinics: pamphlets, posters, surveys and consent forms.
  • Businesses: product labels, adverts, signs, websites and staff notices.
  • Translation agencies: they find clients and send work to freelancers.
  • Research teams: questionnaires and interview transcripts.

Related services: proofreading other translations, transcription, and interpreting at events.

A good sign: a first paid document within one to two months.
