Remote job readiness checker
Who it is for
It is for South Africans thinking about applying for remote jobs, whether with a local company or an overseas one through an employer of record. It suits school leavers, career changers and people with experience who have never worked remotely.
Use it before you spend data and time on applications, so you can fix the setup gaps first.
How it works
Answer seven questions about your setup. Each answer scores 0 to 3, and the tool turns that into a readiness percentage.
More useful than the score are the next steps: each weaker answer comes with a specific fix, like a router UPS for load-shedding or two work samples to prove a skill.
At the end you see the remote roles in our researched database, with what they pay, what they need and where to find them. Nothing is saved.
Worked example
Sipho has fibre at home, his own laptop, a quiet room, confident English and can work SAST office hours, but his Wi-Fi drops when the power goes and he has done customer support only unpaid.
He scores about 76%: close. His two next steps are a small UPS for his router and two or three written support samples.
Then remote customer support roles are a realistic target.
Tips before you rely on it
- Write two or three short work samples for the role you want. Proof of skill beats a long CV for remote jobs.
- Test your connection at the times you would be working. Evening speeds can be very different.
- Put your time zone and working hours in your CV and profiles, so overseas employers can see the overlap.
- Apply on the company's own careers page where you can, and be careful of recruiters who contact you first.

Questions people ask
Can South Africans get remote jobs with overseas companies?
Yes, especially in customer support, sales development, admin and tech. Many hire through employer-of-record services or as contractors.
Do I need a laptop?
For nearly all remote jobs, yes. Their software, tests and calls need a computer.
What about load-shedding?
Employers expect you to stay online. Backup power for your router and device is one of the first things they ask about.
How do I avoid remote job scams?
Never pay a fee to be considered or trained, and never share your OTP. Use our scam checker on any offer.
What internet speed do I need for a remote job?
Many employers ask for at least 10 to 25 Mbps download and a stable connection. Video-heavy roles need more. Run a speed test at the times you would be working.
Which remote jobs are easiest to get from South Africa?
Customer support, admin and virtual assistant roles have the most openings for beginners, especially for UK and European companies. Tech roles pay more but need proven skills.
