Phone offers to stay away from

  • Selling fake branded clothes, sneakers, perfume or electronics: Selling counterfeit goods is a crime under the Counterfeit Goods Act: a first offence can mean a fine of up to R5,000 per item or up to three years in prison, and stock is seized by SAPS or SARS. Unbranded clothing, pre-loved branded items and your own label are legal ways to sell fashion.
  • Dropshipping funded by paid ads on a small budget: Not a scam, but structurally hard: long shipping times to SA, thin margins after ads and payment fees, and ad testing burns through a small budget before you learn anything. Imported orders can also attract customs duty and import VAT. Courses selling it are often the real business.
  • Forex, crypto "signals" and trading bots as income: Trading is speculation and cannot be counted on as income: most retail traders lose money, and "guaranteed returns" are a hallmark of fraud. Check the FSCA register before giving any money to a trading or investment service.
  • Betting systems, "matched betting" and gambling as income: Gambling is not income: the house or bookmaker margin means the expected result is a loss, and "systems" sold online do not change that. We do not recommend it in any form. If gambling is hurting you, the National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free counselling (responsiblegambling.org.za). The National Gambling Board also warns about fake betting apps and scam platforms.
  • Expensive "passive income" courses and coaching funnels: Income claims are rarely verifiable and the seller usually earns from selling the course. Passive income always needs upfront work, distribution and often capital. If a seller promised results that were false, you can complain to the National Consumer Commission.
  • Informal money lending (mashonisa) without registration: Lending money for interest needs registration with the National Credit Regulator once you meet its thresholds, and interest is capped by law. Keeping a borrower’s bank card, SASSA card or PIN is illegal. Unregistered lenders can lose the right to collect and face raids and charges.
  • Paying a fee to get a job, a learnership or a training place: Under the Employment Services Act, nobody may charge a work seeker a fee to find them work. The Department of Employment and Labour warns work seekers never to pay for a job. If an advert asks for money, report it and walk away.
  • Multi-level marketing / network marketing: When income depends on recruitment rather than sales to outside customers, most participants lose money once kits and monthly minimums are counted. Pyramid schemes are illegal under the Consumer Protection Act.
  • Money-doubling schemes, "gifting circles" and fake investment stokvels: Taking money from the public and promising returns without a licence is illegal deposit-taking, and these schemes collapse once new members stop joining. Real stokvels save members’ own money with clear rules. Check the FSCA and SARB warnings before you join anything that promises returns.
  • Buying or selling copper cable and scrap metal without checking where it came from: Cable and infrastructure theft is a serious crime, and scrap dealers must be registered and record every seller under the Second-Hand Goods Act. Collecting cans, bottles and household scrap to sell to a registered recycler is legal; see the recycling paths instead.
  • WhatsApp and Telegram "task" jobs and pay-to-join data entry: This is a scam pattern: small payouts are bait before you are asked to deposit. Real work does not ask you to deposit money to unlock pay.
  • Earning from TikTok views (Creator Rewards): TikTok pays per-view rewards only in some countries, and when we checked in October 2026 South Africa was not on the list. Check TikTok's own eligibility in the app before you count on it. TikTok income here usually comes from brand deals, gifts and sending viewers elsewhere, and it is taxable.
  • Selling alcohol without a liquor licence (an unlicensed shebeen or tavern): Selling liquor to the public needs a licence from your provincial liquor authority. Trading without one can bring fines, seized stock and a criminal record. If you want to run a tavern, apply for a licence first; a legal food stall or spaza is a lower-risk start.

Who it is for

It is for South Africans whose only device is a smartphone, which is true for many people starting out. It suits students, people in rural areas, parents at home and anyone saving up for a laptop.

It shows what really works on a phone, and what to avoid, so you do not waste data and money on fake phone jobs.

How it works

  1. We filter our researched database for options that do not need a laptop, and that fit the hours you can give. Each one shows what it costs to start and links to its full page.

  2. Below that, we list the phone "opportunities" we tell people to avoid, with the reason: paid-to-like task groups, recruitment schemes and betting systems among them.

Worked example

With 10 hours a week and a phone, options include services you can run through WhatsApp, like social media help for local businesses or tutoring by voice note and video call.

What you will not see: apps that pay you to watch videos or like posts. The amounts are tiny or the "earnings" need a top-up to withdraw.

Tips before you rely on it

  • Keep work messages organised with WhatsApp Business: labels, quick replies and a catalogue are free.
  • Use your phone camera well: natural light and a clean background make your work or products look professional.
  • Back up your work photos and files to the cloud on Wi-Fi so a lost phone does not mean lost work.
  • Watch your data use. Video calls and uploads add up fast on mobile bundles.

Questions people ask

Can I really make money with just my phone?

Yes, mainly through services where the phone is your tool for messaging, photos and calls. Income depends on finding customers, not on the phone.

Do apps that pay real money work in South Africa?

Survey and reward apps pay very little for the time and data they use. Task apps that ask you to top up are scams.

How much data will I need?

Use the data cost calculator. Messaging is light; video calls and uploads are heavy.

What should I avoid?

Anything that asks you to pay first, recruit friends, or "like" content for money.

Is WhatsApp Business enough to run a small business?

For many service businesses, yes. It has a catalogue, labels, quick replies and a business profile, and it is free.

Can I do freelance work on a phone?

Some, like social media help, simple design apps and tutoring calls. Most writing, design and admin work is much easier on a laptop.
